    一年一度的游戏业界学术交流盛会游戏开发者会议（GDC）已经于美国当地时间2月18日正式开幕，而Epic Games的一支管理团队也悄无声息地奔赴旧金山。他们出席此次会议的目的虽然并未对外公开，但业内却有多个消息渠道透露，Epic Games和微软正在酝酿着2008年一项有着重大意义的并购计划。

    权威游戏杂志GamePro资深编辑Travis Moses相信，微软将在此次GDC 2008上完成与Epic Games公司关于并购的相关协议。“微软将会以10亿美元的价格收购这家近年来有着惊人发展速度的独立开发商。”Moses在最新一期GamePro杂志中写道。

    Moses认为，微软格外看重Epic Games的主要原因，并不仅仅是由于其在游戏开发方面的不凡实力和卓越表现，更重要的是通过并购Epic Games，微软将可以牢牢掌控虚幻引擎（Unreal Engine）这个在全球范围内被无数开发商和发行商广泛采用的次世代游戏开发引擎。

    “Epic Games之所以引人注目，其中一部分原因是他们的游戏开发能力，但最主要的还是虚幻引擎技术。”Moses在文章中写道：“微软手中握有数量庞大的现金，通过收购Epic Games，微软可以名正言顺地将虚幻引擎技术收入囊中，而这是其他厂商所无法企及的。”

    事实上微软与Epic Games的密切合作和暧昧关系在业内已经不是什么新闻了，微软游戏工作室曾支付巨资给Epic Games开发《战争机器（Gears of War）》，而这款游戏的实际表现也确实没有辜负微软的厚望，不仅包揽了2006年游戏业大部分重大奖项，同时也创造了X360游戏当时的销量记录。

    GDC 2008上，Epic Games的展台紧临着微软公司的展区，而且有不少消息渠道透露，两家公司很有可能联手在此次会议上公布《战争机器》的第二部续作。

When we heard about the almost outrageous claim made in an upcoming GamePro article, we went to the source of all things Epic to get some answers. Finally, Mark Rein responds.

    I have not seen the actual GamePro article but if they're going to make predictions about us selling Epic we would prefer if they started at $2 billion because we don't want anyone thinking that we're cheap.

Not exactly the glowing rejection we were hoping for, but I do think it speaks for itself considering the GamePro article made the magic number of $1 billion dollars seem like it was already a done deal. I think it's probably safe to say we won't be hearing about an Epic buyout any time in the near future.

update (hal here) I've seen the magazine in question now that it's on the news stands and the "article" is part of a GamePro Predictions sidebar that makes it fairly clear that it's a speculative piece. I'm afraid a bit of blame must be leveled at Local Tech Wire for reporting it as a serious journalism effort.
