Starcraft II proves PC gaming is not dead

With the recent announcement that Blizzard's upcoming PC title StarCraft II already amassing more than 800,000 pre-orders, it's a safe to say that PC gaming isn't quite as dead as many believe it to be.

The number of confirmed pre-orders is likely to grow exponentially, though, as the 800,000 copies reported sold only account for brick-and-mortar retail sales.  VGChartz, the organization that first reported the sales amount, is still attempting to get digital copy pre-order numbers from Blizzard but says that this kind of response says tons about the PC gaming industry.

"I'd say that it means that PC retail isn't dead as many claim," VGChartz's Brett Walton tells news10.net in an exclusive email.  "We are still trying to get our hands on digital figures (only Blizzard will know for definite via Battle.net) but to sell over 1 million copies of a PC game in one week at retail in America is impressive - few console games have performed so well this gen."

Walton feels this means that even though it's been more than ten years since the release of the original StarCraft game, there's still a huge amount of StarCraft fans in the world.  The sales number VGChartz is expecting is reflective of that very notion.

"We are currently estimating around 10-12 million games to be sold by the end of the year," says Walton.

For gamers who decide they want to contribute towards that lofty number, news10.net has provided a link on the right-hand side of this page.
