You keep hearing and reading over and over again about how Yao is FINALLY living up to his draft day expectations. You know what I'm talking about. It's on SportsCenter everyday. You see it in the paper, all over the Internet. To hear it from the NBA "experts," Yao came into the league with "enormous expectations."
It's driving me crazy, because that's not the 2002 draft I remember.
I remember a lot of mockery because the Rockets didn't take Jay Williams. I remember comparisons to Rik Smits at best, Shawn Bradley as most likely, and even comparisons to Serge Zwikker. The most common one word moniker for Yao that was most frequently bandied about wasn't "superstar", it was "stiff".
But this was what we were hearing from most of the "experts". And I don't really mean everybody. There was a verbal minority who insisted that Yao had the tools, the drive, and the opportunity to become great. But even Rudy T said that he'd have to work to become great.
I remember when the draft lottery happened that year. I was visiting my friend in Austin, and when it was announced that the Rockets had gotten the first pick in the draft, I literally screamed "We just got Yao Ming!" ClutchFans (ClutchCity) was alive with excitement. But even so, there was some question as to whether Yao Ming was too much of a gamble.
Who went back and re-wrote history? It's absolutely infuriating to me that the guys on ESPN or TNT or ABC will sit there with a strait face and tell you how big the expectations where for Yao just to make themselves look good on TV. As if Yao Ming has been any kind of a disappointment... EVER.
Here's a challenge for you. How many of you can actually find articles from 2002 outlining Yao's "unrealistic" expectations. Find some kind of '02 hype for Yao that was unfounded.
I just remember Charles Barkley kissing ass on TNT. But oh yeah, that was for EXCEEDING expectations.

"experts," in any field, are correct something like 30% of the time.
i stopped listening to what "experts" say.

I remember some analysts predicting Yao would be a bust on the LaRue Martin level of busts. Certainly Shawn Bradley and Rik Smits were the two names most universally used when comparing what Yao might become.

Dicky V
CB4
Bill Simmons

Those are the guys that I remember as slamming Yao the worst when he was first drafted. I think Simmons is the one that brought up the LaRue Martin comparison. Simmons has since come out and admitted that his prediction that Yao would be a bust was one of his worst predictions of all time.
Dicky V
CB4
Bill Simmons

Of course, Yao was underhyped, underestimated and underrated at the draft by the media. The GMs though are different, but many of them still had doubts.
But people always have a different memory about what they have said before. If the facts are different from theiry memory too much, they feel very very very uncomfortable (like kissing a donkey), that's what is happending now.

Even so, Yao fulfilled those expectations a couple of seasons ago. People who were paying attention saw him prove his meddle some time ago. And, this season (well, after the ASG last season) I think he's really surpassed what we could have hoped for on draft night. I suppose the difference is that even the people who are paying no attention, the people who would say 'bust' in the face of all evidence, even they must admit he can kinda play.

Bulls Don't Need Yao Ming
May 3, 2002
By: andy munger

Last year at this time I told readers what a mistake it would be for the Bulls to draft Yao Ying Ming. It still will. He is working out for NBA scouts this week in Chicago and most experts think he is a great prospect. I think he will make a career backup, not someone worth to be a top ten pick.

Yao Ying Ming is a tall human being and can play and run up the court in China. Basketball over there is not even close to NCAA Division II basketball. Yao Ming may not even make the CBA. He is perhaps the biggest hype the NBA has seen for a long time. He may be able to penetrate inside against Japanese or Korean players in international play, but does anyone really think Ming will move by Shack? The best thing for Yao to do would be to stay over there and get a nice job dropping his dream of playing in the NBA.

It's not that foreign players can't compete in the NBA. In fact, there are two Chinese players already in the NBA. I believe both averaged only 5 points per game. This is how much I would expect Yao Ying Wing to peak in his career. He is soft on top and will not be able to handle the NBA defense or pressure play. I can't blame him for wanting and dreaming of the NBA. There is not much glory playing in Asia and being Asia's best player. His best hope would be to enroll in college and trying to improve his soft game before attempting to embarrass himself in the NBA.

The Bulls had two first round draft picks last year. This year they need to trade their pick for a quality NBA player. Then if they sign another top free agent, the Bulls prospects will look better next year for getting that elusive 25 win game season. They will not get it waiting years for Yao Ting to develop.

Edit: Here's another article
If Yao can't alter game, why take him?
Bob Wolfley
If you're Rudy Tomjanovich, if you're the Houston Rockets, don't you have to be scared to death about making Yao Ming the first pick in the draft?
This is more pressure than annually goes to the team with the first pick in the draft. There is a sense that the Rockets can't afford not to take him.
Yao, the consensus opinion seems to be, is too big to avoid.
But you can pose in the press all you want. You can exude all the supreme assurance and confidence in your ability to divine the potential of another Ming Dynasty.
But the fact is Yao Ming is 7 feet 5 inches, but he's not a shot-blocker.
Think hard about that.
He's 7-5 and does all these other wonderful things for someone his size: dribble, take the perimeter jump shot, run the floor, pass, score.
But he's not a shot-blocker.
If Yao is not a shot-blocker, then he's not going to be a dominating, game-altering defender or rebounder. What's the point of being 7-5 on this planet if you are not going to be a shot-blocker, defender and rebounder?
Guarantee you Shaquille O'Neal is not losing sleep worrying about how he's going to check Yao Ming. Yet, the Rockets are poised to draft him in hopes of getting past O'Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers in future playoff rounds.
If you're 7-5 and you're not a shot-blocker or a game-altering defender, then what are you?
A bust from a would-be Ming Dynasty is what you are.
Wolfley

yao was considered a bust before he ever played a game.

once he played and showed that he had skill, it was then that people went to the other extreem and said "well he should be dominant then".

i thought that was funny because a few months ago he was worse than shawn bradley now you're upset that he's not shaq?

ever since his rookie year he was compared to shaq. was amare compared to shaq? no. was it because his game is too different and yao is too similar? that's just stupid.

i'd like to know how it is that a guy who was supposed to be rik smits ended up being compared to the most dominant player of this era for his whole career. that's just nuts.

why isn't dwight howard being compared to kareem? that seems just as fair. maybe chris paul should be compared to magic johnson...

i've never seen that kind of pressure before. notfor a guy that was supposed to be the equivilent of RIK SMITS!

On TNT, Yao went from "he couldnt score more than 18 pts a night" to "we all know he is a scoring center when he entered the league, but his 26/10 arent as dominant as Dwight Howard's 17/13 a night". So at least you see there is some progress on TNT.

Also, Yao's comparison has been upgraded year by year, first he was compared to Shawn Bradley, and he will peak Rik Smits level. No more that kind of talk anymore. Now is that he is not as good as Shaq whatever many points scored on him because Shaq had 3 rings. Dwight Howard will surpass him. So there is some progress at least.

Anyone still remember when Tmac first joined the Rockets three years ago? He made such comments to the media which impress me the most. Tracy said he think Yao can be a very good player and he think Yao 'can be better than Rik Smits'.
My reaction was: Rik who?

Okay... I'll grant you that. But there was certainly no question about Hakeem, Shaq, Ewing, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, etc.

Everyone knows that the quality of the draft has diminished significantly. The first pick is no longer guaranteed to have an impact on your team immediately. If fact this has become the exception.

That wasn't always the case.

But with that notion comes the idea of "draft hype", which is purely artificial and meant to generate excitement. It gives NBA fans something to talk about during the offseason.

Anyway, my best expectation of Yao was 20pts/10rbs at that time. Obviously he was already beyond my hype last year. I think Adidas should have signed Yao for their commercials" Impossible is nothing"

I bet Bull's fans would die to have Yao over Jwilliams now. With the talent they have, they'd have a ring a year or two from now if Yao was on their squad.

Yao was a very raw player coming out of China, but the size and the skills he possessed made him a can't miss prospect. Big men are usually drafted on potential, and it's very rare nowadays to see a big man or anyone for that matter become a force in their first couple of years in the league.

The most impressive basketball trait that Yao possesses is not his physical talent. It is his unselfishness and his willingness and drive to improve his game with the intent of helping his team win ballgames.

Watching that tape of Jerry West talking about Yao Ming's game right before he was drafted just helps you understand how much Yao has developed as a player and a
person. West seemed only impressed with Yao as a shooter from outside of the lane. Everything else about his game(defense, inside scoring, post moves, footwork) was questionable, and look at where his hard work has gotten him now. I don't have to tell you guys what kind of player he has molded himself into.

Again, Yao was drafted on potential. The expectations for him coming in to the league were way too high. There were too many adjustments for him to make coming over from a different country to play against competition 5 times tougher than he was used to. Yao's will to succede is what has gotten him where he is today, and I don't expect his improvement to stop any time soon. The sky is the limit for him. Glad he is on our team.

OK, guys. Can you all talk about what were your predictions/thoughts on Yao around the time he was drafted by Rockets ? Did you see current Yao coming ? Honestly, I did not. But I'm very happy with him right now. Someone may start a poll on this.

History of Yao:

2002: Yao Ming sucks donkey balls. His coordination is so poor that he can't run and chew gum at the same time.

2006 (After Yao has averaged 26/11 in a long stretch and widely regarded as the best center in NBA): Yao Ming still sucks. He can't jump over 3 defenders and then do a 720 windmill dunk. It's the most unimpressive and least dominant 26/11 we have ever seen.

2012 (After Yao has won 3 rings as a Houston Rocket): Yao Ming still sucks. He can't cure cancer. A 7'6" should have been able to do more for mankind than only playing basketball.

only expect him to be 19/9, never thought he could score more than 20 on average.

Even at 19/9, he is worth of the #1 pick given his competition in that weak draft. Of

course, if he only gets 19/9, and suppose I know Amare will do well later on, I might regret the #1 pick, but at the time of the draft, nobody thought Amare was #1. So under any circumstances, Yao would be picked #1.

I thought we should trade the #1 pick for a high caliber front court player to team with Steve and Cat. I just thought drafting a giant dude from China with the top pick was too risky. But I was curious about this dude. So I searched the internet to get more info about him. And I found ClutchCity.net. And when I saw the videos posted here, I became a believer. The rest, as the saying goes, was history.

Plz keep this thread up... It is soo sweet to read this article here.

man, reading this articles, yao must have been having a really hard time over the years ... unbe-f**king-lievable ... but i bet he is smiling now ...
he is indeed a wonder ... i believe 99.9999% of people would have collapsed under a situation like that ...
GO YAO!

Check what has been posted here about the media anticipation.
Sure Yao could be one of the highly anticipated rookies, well, not for success, but for failure, and to be laughed about, by the media. I suppose that's not hate?

No doubt about that. Yao is a high-risk high-payoff pick. Both CD and Rudy T took lots of heats from the media in picking Yao. Some of the media people have been waiting for every opportunity to hammer on Yao in proving they are right. Even JVG tried recently to talk about that issue.
