Local USB copy is very slow. Postby glenndm » Thu Dec 11, 2008 5:18 pm Continuing my DS207+ trials, I've now come to the USB local copy feature. Not blown away by the network transfer speed, I am really disappointed by the local copy TO a USB device. It's so slow that it is practically unusable! Tests show a mean (and meager) throughput of 0,8 MBps ( or 6,4 Mbits/s). That's a far cry from the USB-2 specification of 480 Mbit/s. Or are the ports "Full-speed" rated at 12Mbit/s? This means that an first offline backup of the volume (about 100Gb) would take about 1,5 days to complete further rsync's (at about 10Gb if daily) would reduce to 4 hours, which it is still too long. As the offline backup will only happen once a week, we're back to days. During the tests, only the webmanagment and samba were running. all other features are disabled (and will remain so) I later stopped the apache services to free up memory/cpu load - no improvement. please tell me there's a hotfix/patch ? Re: Local USB copy is very slow. Postby gunrunnerjohn » Sun May 09, 2010 4:10 pm It's likely the filesystem format. I just connected a 20gig USB drive to my Synology DS209 (firmware DSM 2.3-1141), then formatted it to EXT3. I copied at 622mb file to this drive in 40 seconds for a 15.5mb/sec speed. Not a firebreathing speed, but since this 2.5" drive only does about 18mb/sec on my computer, pretty close to it's limits. I used File Station for the copy. Edit: I just tried a 640mb folder with a bunch of 20mb files, it managed right at 20mb/sec, actually a bit better than the same drive formatted FAT32 on my main Windows system.
