The Unreal Engine 4 on Wii U might be a reality, according to new, and somewhat far fetched rumors emerging from forums and on various blogs. Yesterday, Epic revealed that the Unreal Engine 4 is scheduled for “unannounced hardware”, an indication that said “hardware” would exclude the Wii U, since it was announced last year.
Now new rumors have emerged on various forums citing developers at Epic saying that Nintendo tweaked the Wii U and its hardware by adding additional GPU features so that the console could run the Unreal Engine 4. This wouldn’t be the first time Epic made a console maker adjust the specs — for the Xbox 360, Epic managed to convince Microsoft to ship the console with twice as much RAM by showing a version of Gears of War with and without the extra memory.
Our take: we still find it hard to believe Epic will release the Unreal Engine 4 on Wii U, simply because the Unreal Engine is known to be pushing the hardware limits whenever a new generation of consoles is released. And if we do see the Unreal Engine 4 on Wii U, it could be a scaled down version since the upcoming consoles from Sony and Microsoft will be much more powerful. But we’ll have to wait and see, hopefully new details will be revealed at E3 in a few weeks.
