Last week, Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison caused a semi-furor by insinuating the PlayStation 3 could replace the PC in the home. While his comments were mainly directed at the console's entertainment and multimedia capabilities, Sony has long said that the PS3 will have some PC-like functions.
That line was repeated again today by Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi. Speaking with Japanese site PC Impress Watch, the executive defended the PS3's high $499/$599 price points by saying it was not just another console. "Unlike previous PlayStations, it is clearly a computer," he said according to a GameSpot translation.
Kutaragi went on to talk about the need to be able to expand the PS3's technical functions, just like one would with a PC. "Because the PS3 is a computer, we need to do more than just lower the costs, but the console must be able to evolve," he said. He said one of the first tasks at hand would be to introduce a hard-disk drive with higher capacity that the currently scheduled 20GB and 60GB models.
Kutaragi even raised the prospect that, further down the road, Sony might release a PS3 peripheral that could burn Blu-ray discs, the company's high-capacity successor to DVD. "We might want to add a BD drive, a writable drive," he said before quickly reversing himself. "Well, maybe not BD."
Kutaragi also said that, other than the PS3's current read-only Blu-ray drive, the main reason for the console's high cost was the built-in HDD. "For a game console, to add a hard drive puts pressure on cost," he said. "Unlike a semiconductor chip, HDD cannot help lower the cost of the product. ... As a game console, the price has to, over time, be reduced to the 100 dollar range, but that is hard to do with an HDD. ... That [is why] PS3 pricing is not conforming to conventional pricing for a game console."
Meanwhile, Kutaragi's boss, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer, had a few choice words to say about one of the PS3's rivals, the Xbox 360. Actually, it was more like one choice word. During an on-stage Q&A at last week's D: All Things Digital conference, which is organized by the Wall Street Journal, he was asked about the mixed critical reception of Sony Pictures' blockbuster film The Da Vinci Code. He misspoke when responding, saying "Xbox 3" instead of "X-Men 3," prompting laughter from the audience. The Welshman then joked, "There's an obsession!"
Stringer recovered quickly, talking up the PS3 in no uncertain terms. "It's got more bells and whistles than a 747," he boasted. "That Cell processor is extraordinarily powerful and you have nine hours of high definition on the Blu-ray disks alone. ... The reason it's expensive [is that] instead of concentrating on just the games player, which would have been done in the past, PlayStation 3 is designed to go somewhere else, where it's the center of the living room
Sony Computer Entertainment America executive VP and co-COO Jack Tretton says a potential 6 to 10 million unit lead for the Xbox 360 isn't "a significant advantage or a significant disadvantage as far as we're concerned."
Tretton told TheStreet.com, "At the end of the day, what you do in the first year, and whether you do 6 or 10 million units does not determine whether you're successful or not. We're looking to sell 100 million-plus worldwide. We're looking to sell 50 million plus in North America."
Microsoft has announced that it expects to sell 10 million Xbox 360 units by the time the PlayStation 3 hits shelves in November.
During the course of the interview, Tretton made sure to get a couple straight jabs in on Sony's competitor.
"I think most companies, if they'd lost the billions that Microsoft has lost on the Xbox, would question whether or not they belong in the business," he said. "Obviously, they have a different standard of success."
Tretton also stated that the fact that Grand Theft Auto IV will be multi-platform from the get-go will not affect Sony at all. He stressed that it will be the first-party software that makes the difference.
"...I can guarantee you that Sony Computer Entertainment's first-party software far and away outsold Microsoft's first-party software," Tretton said. http://next-gen.biz/index.php?op ... d=3277&Itemid=2
Friendly banter between competing corporate executives is nothing new. Sometimes, however, it starts to spiral out of control, and takes on a life of its own. In the days of the Super Nintendo Entertainment system, disagreements (both public and private) between Nintendo and Sony over the licensing of the planned CD-ROM addon for the SNES caused Sony to strike out on their own and create the PlayStation, effectively ending Nintendo's dominance of the video game arena.
These days, however, the big battle of words is between Sony and Microsoft. This was evidenced by recent statements from Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), in an interview with PlayStation Magazine. With the Xbox 360 recovering from an awkward launch last November—apparently reaching the company's goal of five million units sold so far—combined with the lukewarm reaction over the PlayStation 3's announced price, Sony apparently feels that the time has come to launch a few new salvoes in the war of words. Hirai was asked if Sony and Microsoft seemed to be taking similar paths:
"We seem to. Every time we go down a path, we look behind and they're right there - we just can't shake these guys. I wish that they would come up with some strategies of their own, but they seem to be going down the path of everything we do. If you look at their strategy in other business areas as well, they tend to do that."
Of course, such comments conveniently ignore the fact that Sony itself was a latecomer to the video game console business, not to mention the whole issue of Sony developing an Xbox Live competitor for the PS3, but all's fair in love and marketing wars. The jab at Microsoft's other businesses seems a bit odd, given the fact that Sony continues to ship large quantities of their VAIO laptops and desktops, all bundled with Microsoft Windows.
The conversation got even stranger when the topic veered to Microsoft's HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360. Hirai blasted Microsoft for their strategy on next-gen optical drives:
"And the other thing is, you take a look at, for example, the fact that we incorporate the Blu-ray drive from day one. You're not going to be asking me, 'So, talk to me about this Blu-ray add-on that you have. Does it work for games? Is it just for movies?' That's exactly the kind of pitfall you fall into if you launch something that's too early, too premature..."
This sort of question could well be asked about the built-in Blu-ray drive on the PS3. Was it really necessary for games, given that most games do not currently fill out a dual-layer DVD? Or was it merely a way to put millions of Blu-ray drives in consumer households to boost sales of high-definition movies? Should Sony have made the Blu-ray drive optional? Until the PS3 is released and we can all judge for ourselves, this debate is far from over.
HAHAH Sony?? What HAVE you done??!
OMFG. I knew something like this would happen sooner or later. Sony's death is neigh. Part of me wants to believe its true, actually most of me. But then theres small part that wishes this werent true.
And even though nothing was confirmed, They way ActionMan put everything together it just fell in place perfectly with everything Sony has done. This is crazy.
*****DISCLAIMER*****
About to post a RUMOR!
I REPEAT, THIS IS A RUMOR!!!!!!!
Nothing posted below can be confirmed.
START RUMORS:
Action Man - Sony is having a hard time as of late with some old allies, mainly due to their dealings with the PSP
Action Man - Do you remember the preliminary Sony PSP release lists they released way back at TGS 2k4?
Action Man - It had wonderfull games on em like Devil may cry
Action Man - Shin Megami Tensei
Action Man - King of Fighters Maximum Impact
Action Man - Gran Turisimo 4 Mobile etcetera
Action Man - Those games shouldnt have been on those lists because the developers never intended to release those games for PSP
Action Man - If you'll recall, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan were the ones who announced DMC for the PSP, not Capcom.
Action Man - Sony however because of lack of high profile third party development for PSP put them on the release lists anyway and then started to strongarm the publishers to actually make those games
Action Man - Sony failed big time
Action Man - They outright lied with the PSP to show it had more support then it really had
Action Man - and that they arent able to do the same with PS3 now because people are catching up to their previous lies
Action Man - they anounced a **bleep**load of games that the devs themselves didnt even wanna make
Action Man - GT4 mobile
Action Man - same **bleep**
Action Man - they streamed PS2 footage on a PSP screen for that
Action Man - A double embaresment not only because the likes of Capcom, Atlus etcetera refused to be blackmailed into making those games
Action Man - But more so because even a Sony first party developer put it on the backburner(Polyphony with GT4 Mobile)
Action Man - Now Sony is planning to do the same for their next PS3 showing but the publishers are refusing to play along
Action Man - Sony has been begging em to anounce certain franchises and new IP, even if they are not working on em
Action Man - They have tried to convince them to make CG trailers claiming to be games in development
Action Man - Yet the Devs are not playing along this time
Major Tom - you have this on good authority?
Action Man - yah
Action Man - devs themselves
Major Tom - any franchises we know of?
Action Man - no comment
Action Man - some big **bleep**
Action Man - and big devs
Major Tom - sounds like they were trying to prep for tgs
Action Man - more like their summer show and leipzig games con and then TGS
Action Man - but yeah
Action Man - its looking grimmer then expected
Action Man - way things stand now
Action Man - with the games being prepared for release up until april
Action Man - MS will blow them away in quality, quantity
Action Man - as well as graphics
Action Man - thats why they wanted devs and publishers to show target **bleep** claiming its games in development so people will say
Action Man - hey the x360 killer stuff is coming
Action Man - but they dont want that
Action Man - because they dont even know if they want to make those games for PS3 AND it would cut into the sales of the early games they have for next gen systems because people might figure to wait for the anounced games instead of buying what will be available shortly
Major Tom - sony is getting smacked down by japanese devs it seems
Action Man - yup
Major Tom - Sony expects publishers to shell out money to produce CG movies of games that havent been signed?
Action Man - they offered to ofset that by deducting that from the liscensing costs if the games get made and come to market
Major Tom - wow
Action Man - in effect helping em to develop CG and make sure that the games would come to market
Action Man - they did the same before
Major Tom - i see
Action Man - They are sponsoring MGS4 for instance since they know the importance of that title
Action Man - Its nothing they havent done before
Action Man - They funded the killzone PS3 CG show and were commited to fund it even before they aquired Guerrilla outright
Action Man - same with second party stuff like Motorstorm
Action Man - that CG presentation which they claimed it was ALL GAMEPLAY was paid for with Sony money as well
Action Man - and as it is
Action Man - even the entire development of games like Heavenly Sword and Motorstorm despite not being first party games is entirely funded by Sony
Action Man - same with some PSP commissions they have going
Major Tom - and the CG movie is the initial hook?
Major Tom - the offer to have it made is the way they are approaching devs?
Action Man - Exactly
Action Man - they need to because very few companies seem willing to invest the 20 million+ needed to push the PS3 system to x360 or past x360 levels
Major Tom - that is really pathetic
Action Man - they need it
Major Tom - then again look at the only real ps3 gameplay that has been shown
Major Tom - it is awful
Action Man - they need killer software, real or otherwise,to push installed base of PS3 past x360 in the first few years
Action Man - in order to get the installed base of blu ray players high enough so they can kill of HD DVD and kickstart the new format
Action Man - third parties are wary after previous Sony promises never panned out
Action Man - Current PS3 is a lot weaker then the killer box Sony told em to wait for 3 years ago
Major Tom - wow
Action Man - Their first party software alone is not enough
Action Man - that has been proven by the PSP
Major Tom - one thing, are big devs turning Sony down?
Action Man - yes
Major Tom - on their CG offers?
Action Man - just check Ubisoft's recent public comment about the PS3 needing a pricedrop in 2007, that comment wasn't as innocuous as some might think.
Action Man - EA is doing the same in private
Action Man - and even Square/Enix has threatened to take Dragonquest elsewhere and threatened by making FFXIII core games multiplatform if they are unhappy with PS3 performance
Major Tom - holy crap
Major Tom - you arent bull**bleep**ting are you?
Action Man - Nope
Action Man - meanwhile
Action Man - Companies like Rockstar and Ubisoft are angry about Sony's unwillingnes to pay for timed exclusives to the extent they used to while Sony has aided Sega of all companies to the tune of several million dollars to get games like VF5 exclusively
Action Man - This is because Sony realises that games like VF5 at Sega and their entire Koei partnership(the reason why they showed of crap like Genji2 of at E3) are important for them to secure critical mass in Japan
Action Man - So the western developers feel left out
Action Man - for a company like Rockstar its very hard to accept that they are seen as lesser then Koei by Sony, its hard for them to accept that they have to play second fiddle
Major Tom - What timed exclusives did sony ever get from ubi? Or is that in reference to Assasin's Creed?
Action Man - for instance yes
Action Man - unless Sony pays up to ubisoft
Action Man - in hopes of securing and reaching critical mass fast in japan
Major Tom - right
Action Man - ubisoft will decide that they can make more money by releasing the game simultaneously on ps3, 360 and pc
Action Man - they dont want to be killed again by nintendo
Action Man - like the DS is killing PSP
Action Man - thats a very real fear for sony for Japan
Action Man - the thing is, those western devs have more leverage in that respect
Action Man - because they KNOW it will sell on x360
Action Man - unlike vf5, Koei games etc.
Action Man - So the Western devs need Sony to make it worthwhile for them to stick exclusive, something Sony isn't willing or capable of doing at this point.
Action Man - Losing the number 1 spot in japan would mean they lose the number 1 spot worldwide
Action Man - japanese centered developers would make Wii games instead of PS3 games and International oriented developers(like koei and Sega) would switch to multiformat and timed exclusive publishing
Action Man - all things that would kill Sony's long term chances worldwide
Major Tom - now that dq, ff13 **bleep**, you have that on good authority?
Major Tom - because that is HUGE
Action Man - yah
Major Tom - wow
Action Man - they are threatening
Action Man - doesnt mean it will happen
Action Man - sony will most likely cave in for such a title
Action Man - and give em a big moneybag anyway
Action Man - we shall see
More PS3 Downgrades On The Way?
« previous post next post »He's back. The connected PS3-party wet blanket who brought us covert info on the PlayStation 3 has dug up some dirt from a phantom insider who claims the PS3 may see even more downgraded specs. From lower clock speeds to an external power brick to who-knows-what-else, one thing we know for certain is that we sure as hell won't be getting what was promised at E3 2005.
More dirty insider talk after the jump.
Red says: got any interesting news?
Phantom Insider says: sure
Red says: then let's start it up
Phantom Insider says: Fully functional PS3 betas still do not exist
Red says: hmm
Phantom Insider says: Despite that we have seen a number of downgrades
Red says: clock speed?
Red says: remember it was going to be 3.5 ghz?
Phantom Insider says: And now we have been told that the powersource might be an external 400 watt unit after all
Phantom Insider says: instead of internal as promised
Red says: interesting
Phantom Insider says: The current designs despite having vents all over the place apparently still cant dissipate the heat to sufficient levels
Phantom Insider says: And yields on 3.2 Gigaherz CELL processors are too low
Red says: they can't produce them in mass supply still?
Phantom Insider says: so the final release might run only at 2.8 gigaherz
Red says: what have you heard about the rsx?
Red says: why would that be downgraded?
Red says: it as already somewhat weak
Phantom Insider says: RSX is finished and has been finished for quite a few months now
Red says: hmm
Phantom Insider says: we know what it can and cannot do
Red says: yea?
Phantom Insider says: I won't comment any further
Red says: hint?
Phantom Insider says: No
Red says: come on, this is anonymous
Phantom Insider says: I can't tell you more
Phantom Insider says: I do not want to lose my job
Red says: does it bode well for the ps3?
Phantom Insider says: Last time we had a lot of internal emails coming in from Sony
Red says: hmm not surprised
Red says: you were the first to blow the lid off things
Phantom Insider says: They were looking for the sources of the delay and dev problems leaks
E3 2006: Xbox 360 Assassinated
Ubisoft Montreal's Prince of Persia influenced action game may come to Xbox 360.
by Douglass C. Perry
May 12, 2006 - Ubisoft Montreal revealed its next incredible project, Assassins: Creed, exclusively for PlayStation 3 at E3 this year, much to the delight of Sony console fans and to the dismay of Microsoft consoles fans.
A third-person action game in the vein of Prince of Persia, Ubisoft Montreal's newest title shows off the next generation with fantastic texture work, early but promising animations, and newly envisioned levels of Prince/Spider-Men climbing/traversing. But the game, officially, is strictly exclusive to PlayStation 3. Ubisoft officially would not comment on a possible Xbox 360 version.
According to sources close to the company, however, there are potential plans for an Xbox 360 version at Assassins: Creed sometime in 2007. Additionally, Microsoft sources who asked not to be mentioned by name, claimed the demo, hidden behind closed doors at E3, was running on an Xbox 360 using a third-party USB PlayStation controller. The game system was hidden in a stand covered by a sheet. Again, Ubisoft officials would not comment.
May 10, 2006 - Sony Computer Entertainment is all about HD with PS3 -- it's HD or die. Not a single one of its games on the E3 show floor was running in standard definition (not too much a feather in their cap -- if there's an Xbox 360 game on the floor without HD, we've got a standing offer for them for a $5 dollar bill and a slap in the face for wasting our time.) However, last year, SCE essentially came out and said that HD was all about 1080p, and that any system without such a res was essentially not quite next-gen.
So, where are we with HD a year later? Well, we're in the 1080p era now, but we're not seeing that as a full-on standard by any means. Most of the games on the show floor (both at Sony's booth and at other booths displaying PS3 games) were running at 720p in the current build, although higher resolutions are being targeted for the final game. Here's a rundown of what we have been able to confirm regarding resolutions for PS3 titles:
Resistance: Fall of Man -- 720p, aiming for 1080 in either form (an Insomniac designer says that the game can run at 1080 in the current build, but the team is weighing the trade-off in system power consumption at that res ... basically, they can do it, and now it's all up to what's best for the game.)
MotorStorm -- 720p on show floor, will stay at 720p but will get to (and hopefully be locked at) 60fps
Warhawk -- 720p on show floor
Heavenly Sword -- 720p on show floor
Eye of Judgment -- 720p
My SingStar -- *TBA
Genji 2 -- 720p
F1 '06 -- 720p, planning for full 60FPS but not necessarily any resolution bump-up
Virtua Tennis 3 -- 720p, planning for 1080i
Sonic the Hedgehog -- 720p
Heavy Rain -- *TBA (expected to be 1080p or 1080i, due to placement at booth -- the game was placed on monitor with a "1080" plaque, but this refers to the Sony monitor, and several PS3 games not at 1080i or 1080p were on these screens, possibly with TV-generated upscaling)
TV-generated upscaling
Indiana Jones -- *TBA
Full Auto 2: Battlelines -- 720p at show, the team is weighing options past that but with the defining factor being a 60FPS framerate above all else
Fatal Inertia -- *TBA
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance -- *TBA
Assassin's Creed -- *TBA
Tiger Woods 07 -- *TBA (demo is only tech concept, running on PS3 but not really a PS3 "game" demo)
NBA Live 07 -- *TBA (demo is only tech concept, running on PS3 but not really a PS3 "game" demo)
The Club -- Only playable on Xbox 360 at E3
Tony Hawk's Project 8 -- Only playable on Xbox 360 at E3
Haze -- Only playable on Xbox 360 at E3
Rainbow Six: Vegas -- Only playable on Xbox 360 at E3
Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway -- Only playable on Xbox 360 and PC at E3(貌似这个前几天让cow们欢呼雀跃ps3物理超强的游戏……

4. Please please please please please please PLEASE! let thie be sony's last console. All they've ever done for the industry is buy up a bunch of developers so that they could force fans of certain series to pay ridiculous prices for junky, unreliable consoles when we could be getting the games on other systems. I'll admit that the PS1 brought gaming to the mainstream and did something for the industry, but these prices, promises and games are proof that as an industry we've outgrown Sony. Please go away, I promise nobody will miss you.

5. I watched the event live, and it I don't think i was that good. But I did really enjoy Heavenly Sword-I think that game could kick some serious ass. Wasn't impressed with resistance:Fall of man though.
Was I satisfied?
Requires two answers:Yes and no
Yes becuase the price was rite around what I thought it would be. I wasn't suprised about the controller Daul Shock 3 redisgn. Even though it was a blantant rip off of Nintendo's revmote. But because they put that "6 dagrees of motion" into the controller, it can no long have vibration.
"Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation 2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor,"
Also excited for the two sqaure enix tittles.
No because for Sony touting the ps3 as twice as powerful as the 360, I didn't see anything to indicate that.
There is also the fact that Sony criticized MS very heavily for having two SKU's, and now look what Sony has done...they did the same thing (albeit a little different).
I'm also not suprized that Sony took away the 500 connections in the back. The 499 version doesn't even have an HDMI output, and the 599 only has one, not two.
Same thing with the wifi...only the 599 has wifi built in.

6. Who are they kidding with those projected numbers of sales...these things don't look easy to manufacture...and rumors of low chip yields for the Cell processor. They will be lucky to match the 360's production rates.
Boy is the price a no brainer...
PS3 - $499
360 - $299

7. PS3 lets fanboys down...again. Parents are not buying a $600 console for their teenagers. At to the fact that MS is dropping their price and that there is no HDMI on the $499 version. Better hope the hype does something for their sales...
Oh...and the PS3 is double the power of the 360. HA!! Sony is a joke.

8. Guys, sorry to burst the bubble. No matter what the reason Sony gives for not having shock in the controller because it wont work with the new control "6 axis". It just isnt true. They were sued along with Microsoft over using that technoloy from someone else without permission. Microsoft settle the law suit. Sony as they always do, do not settle lawsuits. So they fought it in court. They lost of course, couldnt buy thier way out of this one. They will never be allowed to us that in a controller agian. that is the true reason you see the design change. "interfers" hardly. MORON Sony Rep

The creative director of Ubisoft Montreal had harsh words for Sony during an E3 workshop focusing on next-generation game design.
Clint Hocking, the creative director behind titles such as Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory explained how he was disappointed by Sony's attempts to copy technologies from the other consoles. After referring to Sony's mimicking of Xbox Live, and then duplicating components of Nintendo's motion sensitive controller, Hocking paused in frustration.
"How much more 'me too' can [Sony] be?," he asked.
Earlier in the discussion Hocking attacked the industry's strategy to up the ante in visuals significantly with each console.
It's a "fundamental problem of approach" to continue to push for stronger graphics, he said. He argued such an approach puts game developers in situations where they have to be factory workers. Assemble art texture here, model texture shades here. Repeat.
Further, Hocking claimed the adoption rate of high-definition televisions is so low, that the approach wastes resources on art that many customers won't even appreciate.
At the conclusion of the workshop, Hocking applauded Wii's new controller interface. If it can meet the technical accuracy promised by Nintendo, it can open up the creative minds of game designers, he said. While graphics may add emotion, Wii's new controller interface is more likely to bring emotion directly to the player.
Even developers are saying something bad about the PS3 now.

This is kind of sad, but it is also true. Sony is the conglomerate of stolen ideas, everyone knows it. They have had a vendetta against Nintendo since they tried to screw them over in 1993 with the original "Playstation" add-on to the SNES. I am not surprised they pulled this, but i'm glad that everyone sees through it.

The trademark section is with the note "(for query)". What is actually written in there as "Trademark (for query)" is actually "§P∞S", not even "P∞S". How to pronounce the trademark is also registered, and it's the same as "PS", no infinity or whatever. So what do those '§' and '∞' mean in the context of the trademarks database? Apparently they are control characters.
To illustrate what those control characters mean we can browse other trademarks. For example H10-58610 by SCE has this image:
Its trademark for query is "§X∞I∞[sai]". '§' in the head means it's an image trademark, not a word trademark. So what does '∞' mean? I think it means it changes where characters are put in a trademark image. Another control character that appears in trademarks is '\', which means CR-LF.
Another question is, why the mere drawings of the PS3 controller have "§P∞S" as the query term. I think it's because the PS3 controller has a button with the PS symbol at the center of it. I can verify this theory since Trademark Application 2005-49788 is for the most famous PS symbol and its query term is also "§P∞S".

IGN: 40-player online is pretty ambitious for a game that has this much data being tossed about at once. What convinced you that you could upgrade from 32 to 40 without any problems and how will the game deal with a few poor connections amongst the solid ones?
<--start image table -->
<--end image table -->Eric C. Ellis, Lead Online Gameplay Programmer: We set a target to run with 32 players at 60 frames per second and we hit that goal solidly for our E3 demo. After hitting that target, (which we were pretty proud of), and getting a lukewarm reaction to those numbers, we went back and decided that what would show off next-gen power better was a game with more stuff blowing up and more players.
So, we made the decision to run at 30 frames per second and add more players and a greater level of things that explode along with more environmental effects. To make sure we run well over the internet with that many players, we have all spent a lot of time running with artificially high latency and packet loss so that we make sure our systems are designed to handle them without looking bad.

Unreal Engine 3 for Playstation 3 shaping up
WE HEAR A the Unreal 3 engine is taking shape. But I have to disappoint all of you PC lovers as this time we are talking about Playstation 3 version.
It won’t be the launch title, whether we talk about Unreal engine 3 or your actual Unreal Tournament 2007. It is planned that the real game should show its face at some point in the year 2007.
Epic never wanted to be on the launch title bandwagon as you have to nail yourself to the deadlines and these guys like to make their own rules. We know that Epic actually shows the demo of Gears of Wars for PC and the VP chap was misquoted, as the guys want to present their gaming stuff as a revolutionary, not the Sony’s Playstation 3.
Epic’s Mark Rein the VP of Marketing agrees that the Sony Playstation 3 is pretty revolutionary but we here at the INQ know that a console without a good game is just an empty hot box.
We also learned that the Unreal Engine 3 will look far better than the I last time saw it back at the NV40 launch in Genève, more than two years ago. Even then it looked incredible pretty but it will look even better.
The Playstation 3 developers, especially the ones that want to purchase the engine, are always a bit anxious but yet again it is all on schedule and should be finished at some point by roughly mid 2007. µ
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
. Gears of War没有PC版。

PlayStation 3 Hands-on
Is that a PS3 in our office or are we just pleased to see you?
by Matt Wales, IGN UK
UK, October 13, 2006 - So, want to know what we did yesterday? We sat in a small room with garish wallpaper, staring eyeball to diode at the future. Well, a future at any rate - Sony's future to be precise. You see, finally, after months of staring at the bugger from behind inch-thick Plexiglas, the PlayStation 3 tossed aside its security blanket and exposed itself fully to the IGN UK team.
First things first then. Yes, it looks every bit as imposing as it does in the photos you've undoubtedly seen. With its sleek curves, see-thru hood and delicate metallic flourishes, the PlayStation 3 is clearly a machine designed to dominate your front room, screaming "I AM THE FUTURE OF HOME ENTERTAINMENT!" at anyone in the vicinity. Of course, as with Sony's other high-concept gaming beauty, it's also prone to lose its impressive lustre within minutes if you're of a sticky-fingered inclination. Or, in our case, thirty people who really should be doing some proper work raid the PS3 party to caress, ogle and tease the thing in pure, schoolboy-ish excitement. And - just in case you were wondering - yes, the front-mounted PS logo DOES rotate to accommodate both your horizontal and vertical storage requirements.
PlayStation 3: The Wilderness Years.
Much like the PSP though, the PS3's impressive form factor is only the tip of the machine's unerring ability to stun the crowds - so let's dive a little deeper. Actually, not too deep just yet, we'll start where most people are likely to start their PlayStation 3 experience: with the 'on' button.
Since sending out smoke signals to our US-bound brethren trumpetting the arrival of Sony's behemoth in our UK office, we've been inundated with requests, queries and rumours to prove or disprove. One of the more intriguing ones floating around in our inbox was whether Sony had really pulled out the stops, replacing the console's external buttons and switches with flat, heat-sensitive panels. Well, alas, that doesn't appear to be the case. Certainly, the machine's 'on/off' and 'eject' buttons are completely flush with the small shelf protruding beneath the disc-slot, but touch-sensitivity seems to be the order of the day here. You'll still have that tingle of retro-futuristic glee, sending your PS3 spiralling into action with the most delicate of touches, you just won't accidentally fire your precious Blu-Ray discs across the room if you've set your thermostat too high. What's more, if you don't believe us, we got our friendly Sony PR to put his debug console through its paces too, with a specially designed series of scientific tests. Here are his findings: "I tried breathing on [the buttons] and nothing happened. But it did turn on when I touched it with a 2p piece." Next stop: the Nobel prize!
Mysteries Revealed: PS3 is bigger than the PSP, afterall.
So with that particular quandary resolved, let's fire the damn thing up! If you've used a PSP before, you'll be instantly familiar with the PS3's Cross Media Bar navigation system (or XMB, if you prefer). One nice new touch during boot-up though is the tantalizing orchestral tune-up sound that accompanies the wafting hessian backdrop and unassuming "Sony Computer Entertainment" logo - it's got that whole "Let's get this goddamn show on the road!" feel to it, so nice job Sony.
Navigating the XMB itself is a doddle, with the eight main categories - menu, settings, photo, music, video, game, network and friends - branching off into a multitude of sub-options. As much as we'd love to list each and everyone of them, we'd kind of like to leave you at least SOMETHING to discover for yourselves, so we'll just tease you with the news that the PS3 text input menu (identical to the slightly cumbersome nine-square mobile phone-style layout found on the PSP) now features fully-fledged predictive text. While the PSP stopped short, offering simple suffixes for things like web addresses, it seems that the PS3 has a complete dictionary to cross-reference, taking much of the pain out of the process. And when we say complete, we mean complete - three digits into sticking in one of the IGN team's name, the PS3 kindly suggested we might be trying to type "Ejaculations". Sadly, we weren't.
PlayStation 3 Hands-on

Interface-wise, we've still got a lot of unanswered questions. For example, what happens when you stick a DVD, PS1 or PS2 disc in the machine? Well, as of right now nothing - the debug unit Sony's demoed to us still features slightly outdated firmware, meaning the machine flatly refuses to play anything other than Blu-Ray discs. Similarly, all attempts to connect our PSPs and Cyber-shot digi-cams to the console were met with resounding indifference. However, we'll be getting our hands on an updated version of the machine imminently, so rest assured we'll be probing even deeper next time around.
So, having messed around with the PS3's XMB, there wasn't too much left for us to do beyond stick in a game. Chris Roper, IGN, asks: "Can you do a quick write up on impressions of using the system's basics - i.e. Loading and ejecting a disc?" Well, Chris, it's quite simple. You carefully position the disc-based media of your choice against the PS3's front-loading drive slot and the magic fairies deep inside suck it up like a particularly enthusiastic four-quid whore. It's hardly the cutting edge of technology, but it's yet another example of Sony's dedication to removing all unsightly obtrusions in its quest for ultimate sexiness. Plus, it makes the Xbox 360's tray-loading drive look positively last-gen. Bonus! Ejecting a disc demands nothing more than a carefully placed finger on the appropriate button in front of the slot - minimal fuss, minimal exertion required!
Sony, Simmons and a gigantic ball of floating hair.
This time around, Sony's only game offering was the TGS build of MotorStorm, which Alex is already knee-deep in comprehensive hands-on coverage for. Instead of duplicating that, we'll take a look at one last thing - possibly the most controversial aspect of the PS3: the controller. Prepare to be shocked though: we don't really like it all that much. True enough, you can go along with Phil Harrison's proclamation that it's already the industry-standard controller amongst umpteen-million gamers around the globe, but, arguably, that doesn't make it the best. Personally, we can't help but feel that the SIXAXIS (as it's now known) has been sadly neglected when viewed alongside the rest of the PS3. Compared to Microsoft's uber-comfortable Xbox 360 pad, the SIXAXIS feels cheap, plasticky, uncomfortable and disconcertingly light - almost as if it's going to fly out of your hands during those more extreme gaming moments.
More worrying still, the newly-designed lower L and R shoulder triggers feel more like they belong on an early controller prototype than the near-final model. Replicating the 360 pad, rather than being simple shoulder-mounted buttons, the triggers are now hinged horizontally along the controller, with pressure forcing them inward along the bottom - like triggers then, really. Trouble is, they're placed almost unnaturally low meaning we found ourselves operating them by jamming our fingers in between the hinges to apply pressure, rather than using the buttons themselves. What's more, the triggers are convex, with no grooves to keep your fingers in place - an issue further compounded by their smooth finish, offering no resistance against your finger tips. Invariably we found our digits slipping off with the triggers snapping back to their default position. Bah. Of course, the PS2's Dual Shock pad wasn't without its faults either but we still learned to live with it. It's just a shame that Sony hasn't used its resources to bring its controller up to next-gen standards along with its cutting-edge hardware.
IGN UK puts PS3's wireless controller to the test.
Skipping over the four red LEDs sandwiched between the shoulder buttons, designed to show which player number your pad is assigned to, there's one last thing to mention about the controller - that's the PS button slap-bang in the middle of the pad. At present, it doesn't seem its full power has been truly harnessed, with our friendly Sony representative unable to explain what we can expect from it in final retail units. For the time being though, holding the button down for a couple of seconds - whether in-game of other wise - brings up a secondary menu, featuring options to turn off your console or disable the wireless controller you're using. Even more handily, the display shows the amount of play-time (in minutes, no less!) left in your current battery charge. Toot!
So for now, that's it. However, with plenty of questions still left unanswered, you can be sure we'll be badgering Sony for another look at its monstrous next-gen creation soon. And, of course, as soon as that happens, we'll bring our findings straight to you, loyal reader. If you think that means we're going to stop bragging about the fact we've all licked a PS3's undercarriage and you haven't though, you're sadly mistaken. Sorry.

Rainbow Six Vegas Dev comments on 360/PS3 versions:
Quote:
Taken from Games Radar, from Edge magazine:
"Further to the Edge comments this month about how much better Call Of Duty 3 looks on 360 in comparison to the PS3 version, I noticed this in GamesTM this month On Rainbow Six Vegas.....
'' .....a chat with the Ubisoft development team shed a little light on he matter."All I'm able to say is that we're looking to ship on PS3 as well but we're not having specific content.....we're developing with 360 as our main development platform and porting to PS3 means that there's less memory available for us to use, but we're trying to minimise any drop in quality"..Such comments sugget that the gap in performance between Playstation3 and Xbox 360 is nowhere near as powerful as some would like us to believe and that the console may even be less able than Microsoft's..."
They also go on to say that only the 360 version will feature the face mapping technolgy and that their are no plans for PS3/PSP linkage or to use the sixaxis tilt technology.

I'm not going to read this whole thread, but I disagree with the OP about PS3 vs. 360. I felt that 360 games at the event looked noticeably better than PS3 games, and had more consistent framerates as well. I'm not going to name specific games until the embargo is up (signed NDAs).

The latest hands on with Treyarch's return to the Call of Duty series.
October 9, 2006
by Robert Workman
We recently had the opportunity to check out all the latest builds of Activision's forthcoming first-person shooter Call of Duty 3 at the company's press event in Santa Monica. In future articles, we'll discuss the Xbox 360 multiplayer and hands-on testing with the Wii. For now, we're going to discuss the forthcoming PS3 edition, and what gamers can expect from this latest WWII-based first-person shooter.
During our play time with the PS3 edition, we were only introduced to one level in the game, called The Forest. In this stage, the team has to advance through the foliage, surrounded by trees and leaves as they sneak up on Nazi posts and take out any awaiting enemies. Your player's primary weapon is a sniper rifle, which can be fired with the R2 trigger. To get the best effect of the sniper rifle, however, you have to hold down the L2 trigger so you can actually look through the scope. You can further enhance your aim by pressing in the analog stick, which enables you to hold your breath for a brief period of time to steady the rifle. This was a function introduced in Call of Duty 2 on the Xbox 360 last year, and it remains just as effective a tool in this game.
As we continued through the forest, we found more and more Nazi groups awaiting us. And they weren't standing out in the open either- they scattered in different spots in their outpost, hiding behind trees and then leaning out to take quick shots at the team. Treyarch, taking over for Infinity Ward, has done a good job with this engine, keeping the AI tight and surprisingly effective with their aim. You really have to scramble across the open terrain to avoid taking too much damage, or you're going to be another casualty of war. Like in COD2, you don't have a health meter. As you grow more damaged, the screen begins to redden.
The graphics in the PS3 version look pretty damn good. The game doesn't run as smoothly as the Xbox 360 version (not yet, anyway- it runs at 30 frames per second instead of 60), but it still moves very fast and has lots of detail. Streams of light shined through the trees as you made your way through the forest, creating a beautiful sense of ambience. The animation is very detailed as well. Hit a soldier in a non-vital area and they'll crouch down momentarily before deciding to shoot at you again. The visual effects are solid, although it would have been nice to see another stage to compare it with.
Meanwhile, let's talk play mechanics. The PS3 controller is surprisingly comfortable with a game such as this. You control movement of your player with the analog sticks, and the R2 trigger is used to effectively fire your weapon. The L2 trigger also comes in handy- hold it and you get better aim on enemies. You can also lob smoke and "frag" grenades to confuse or obliterate the enemy, using the L1 and R1 shoulder buttons. (You only have a few, so be cautious.) The melee attack can be triggered with the press of a button, or you can jerk the Sixaxis controller to lunge at the enemy.
The audio remains on par with the series. The music is just as stirring as it's ever been, taking heroic themes and playing them along the backdrop when dramatic scenarios arise. You'll also hear constant screams from both members in your squad as well as from the enemy. Many of the voice actors from Call of Duty 2 are back in full effect, including Aliens star Michael Biehn.
The only thing we didn't get to test out, however, was multiplayer. Treyarch assured us that the 360 and PS3 versions of the game would support up to 24 players in different games, including Capture the Flag and Deathmatch. We didn't get to test out the PS3's multiplayer functions, but Treyarch assured us it would be the same as the Xbox 360's- and those were fun as hell from what we tried out.
The game's tempo remains intense throughout, and that's good news. Treyarch has made a wise decision here, following in Infinity Ward's footsteps instead of trying something off the beaten path. Not that I don't mind creativity, but Call of Duty 2 for 360 was soooo good, and this one looks to be following suit. Rummaging through the forest and setting up defensive positioning for sniper fire is exciting, and the team has informed us that other levels in the game will be just as intense. Like I said, though, it would've been nice to see them. Our play time with the game was all too brief.
Call of Duty 3 is sure to be a fantastic game, and will provide potential PS3 owners with another quality FPS alongside Resistance: Fall of Man. And although the game isn't any different in nature from last year's Call of Duty 2, Treyarch is doing a bang-up job with the engine, and the gameplay adapts pretty well to the funky PS3 controller. Sure, the theme of WWII shooters may be growing tired, but if they've done this well, we can always put up with one more. Look for a full review next month.
