This is a tutorial for convert / encode a DVD disc into a MP4 file for most device.
这个教程将教你如何将 DVD 转换为 MP4 文件, 并兼容大多数设备.
Why choose MP4?
为什么要用 MP4 格式？
Most pocket video device is called MP4 player, so They can play MP4, and SONY PSP, Xbox, Playstation 3, iPad iPhone, android phones and TV sets may also play MP4 files, but none of them play mkv files. (AVI is a verrrry old microsoft format do not use it) (Chinese brand/made products may support mkv/real video becasue they are designed to play piratical movies)
大多数便携视频播放器教啥名字？ MP4 播放器，所以他们能播放 MP4. 然后 SONY PSP, 微软 XBOX 360 游戏机, SONY PS3 游戏机，iPhone iPad, Android 手机 还有各种电视机 现在都可以播放 MP4, 但是很少有能直接播放 mkv 的。(AVI 是微软的一种很老的私有格式所以兼容性和能力都不好) (国产电视机和各种国内产品因为本来就是设计来放盗版的 所以他们支持 mkv/rmvb.)

DVD Decrypter (Windows only) Download http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/
for decipher legal copy of a DVD.

解密正版 DVD (正版 DVD 都是加密的仿制你 非法 copy, 盗版不加密)
1. Decipher your Legal DVD (if you are using a piratical DVD or home made DVD skip this step)
1. 破解你的正版 DVD (如果你使用盗版/自制 DVD 请忽略这部)
Put your DVD into DVD-ROM driver, use administrator rights to launch DVD Decrypter and set/change the Region code for your DVD-ROM (the code Must match the DVD you want to rip)
放入你的 DVD到光驱里，使用管理员权限开启 DVD Decrypter, 可能会提示你设置或者更改 DVD-ROM 区码，必须更改成和 DVD 片子匹配的区码，比如一张美版正版 DVD 你就要设置 1区 否则无法 rip 或者 播放.

1. Choose your DVD 选择你的 DVD 光驱
2. Mode => File 选择菜单 Mode => File
3. Choose a output folder for Deciphered DVD folder 选择一个解密后的 DVD 输出目录
4. Click 4 area to start decipher 按4的位置开始 解密
After this you will get a folder contain your DVD with region free settings, any player can play it.
完事之后你就得到了一个目录，里面是解密后的 DVD, 任何播放器可以播放，无锁.
2. Get the subtitle (Optional) 获取字幕 (可选)
DVD may not contain your language, so you may want to search the internet for free subtitles. The subtitles must in SRT format and encoded in UTF-8 (You must use UTF-8 if you want to add a non-English Subtitles. or else you got Mojibake and unable to read it)
DVD 特别是正版 DVD 不一定有你要的字幕， 这个时候就要区网上(推荐射手网)找找外挂字幕，字幕格式必须是 SRT 的，并且要是 UTF-8 编码的 如果不是 UTF-8 编码会在很多设备或者非中文windows上乱码 （由于很多字幕组没有国际意识所以使用默认的 ANSI 编码，所以大多数下载到的字幕是 ANSI 的，必定乱码！ 一定要自己转成 UTF-8 防止乱码）

If you don't have a advanced text editor, just use windows notepad to do this. Open your srt subtitles and save as, and set encoding as UTF-8. If you are using Mac use textwrangler to do this, if you are using Linux MadEdit will be fine.
如果你没有特别的文本编辑器，使用windows 自带的记事本(Notepad) 就可以，用记事本打开字幕文件(srt) 然后选择 文件 另存为， 然后看图操作。一定要选择 UTF-8 否则可能中文windows上不乱吗 但是到了 手机 或者其他啥不是windows系统或者非中文系统的地方就会乱码。如果你在使用 Mac 那么 textwrangler 可以完成这个工作，如果你在使用 Linux 那么 MadEdit 是个很好的选择可以转换 UTF-8
3. Real encoding / 开始编码转换
Launch handbrake 启动 handbrake

1. Choose your sourse (can be your piratical DVD or the Deciphered DVD folder on your HDD) 选择你的源(可以是你的盗版 DVD 或者解密后的那个目录)
2. Click High Profile for better picture (如果你想画面好一点点击那个 High profile)
I do not recommend you to choose the iPad / iPhone or other profiles, it's will change the picture resolution only good for that device, but our target is most devices. so leave it.
我不推荐你区点击其他的什么 iPad iPhone 这种设置，因为它会导致片子的分辨率改变，只有那个设备好，其他设备就傻逼了，我们的目标是兼容大多数设备，所以不改变比较好，画质损失最小。
3. Click the Title you want. DVD contain many stuffs like the main Movie the menus, infomations, or previews of other movies. Normally we choose the one with longest time, that's the main movie. 选择你要的 Title, DVD 里面有很多东西 比如菜单，花絮，其他预告片等，一般来说选择主电影，就是时间最长的那个。
4. Choose the chapters you want. normally from 1 to the last one. but if you want to do a test run before encode the whole movie you can use 1 to 1. 选择你要章节，一般来说就是从1到最后，不过如果你想先看看效果，选择 1到1 可以预览下最终效果。
5 and 6 Disable Anamorphic and keep aspect ratio. 取消自动剪切，并选择保持比例 非常重要，否则画面会被剪切或者人被 压扁或者拉长.

1. If the Movie is interlaced you need to Deinterlace it. or you'll get sliced picture. (Homemade moive shot by old DV and Old TV signal is interlaced. Movie normally are progressive) If you are not sure leave it as the picture settings. 如果你的片子是interlaced(隔行扫描)的。你要做一个 deinterlace(去除隔行) 的操作否则出来的画面是拉丝的。一般来说 家用老式卡带 DV 拍的和老式模拟电视是隔行的，电影或者照相机手机拍的都是Progressive(逐行)的. 如果你不清楚 看图设置.

1. Click web optimized for better streaming playback. (put the mp4 on NAS or iTunes, and use home network to stream to a device connected to your TV, like Apple TV or other STB.
点击 Web optimized 这样可以更好的网络播放，比如你可以吧这个MP4 放在 NAS 服务器或者 iTunes 上，然后通过家庭网络播放，不用 copy 来 copy 去。比如使用 Apple TV 播放
2. Video Codec Must choose H.264! Video codec(视频编码方式) 必须选择 H.264
3. FPS normally use same as source. or what your devices like. FPS 速率一般选择 same as source(和源片一样) 或者你播放器的需求。
4. Click constant framerate 选择 constant framerate 固定 FPS.
5. Click Constant quality 选择 Constant quality (固定画质) 画质固定，码率更具画面复杂程度动态变化，这样最节约.
6. Slide to RF:18 (small value better quality but large file. 18 is a decent value that give you great quality with not to big file.) 把滑块移动到 18 附近， 数字越小画质越好文件越大，18 的画面我已经很满意。 文件也不会太大.

1. Click Add Track to add a audio track. 点击 Add Track (添加轨道)来增加一个你要的音频轨道。
2. Select the audio track which you've added and click area 2 to choose the source audio track. 点击你刚加的这个轨道，先则 2 区域来决定改轨道是那个音轨？ 是日文还是英文 还是 5.1 还是 2.0
3. Click area 3 to decide the output track's encoding. if you want 5.1 sound use auto passthrough, but it's good to have a 2.0 aac that any device can play back. in the picture. My dvd have two audio tracks, English and Japanese in AC3 (Surround sound) format. If I want to keep surround sound I use AC3 passthrough, but not every device is capable to play AC3 sounds, so I created another 2 tracks make them mix the surround into 2 channel AAC. so I have 2 Languages but 4 tracks.
区域3是选择音频编码方式的，很多 DVD 是有 5.1 环绕声的，如果你想 MP4 保留 环绕声就选择 Auto passthrough (自动通过) 意思是保留环绕声，不去转换它。 但是不是所有的设备都支持环绕声播放，所以你最好加2个 AAC 2 声道的音轨。 你看到上图的例子，我DVD只提供了2个音轨， 日文和英文的AC3。 但是我却建立了 4个轨道，一个是保留原始 日文英文的环绕声轨道，另外2个是为了某些设备无法播放 AC3 DTS 环绕，特地将 AC3 编码成任何设备都能播放的 AAC 格式的音轨。
4. Mixdown is not applicable for Passthrough, Choose Stereo or you know the source track is in Dodby pro logical II (normally it's wrote on DVD Case.) Mixdown 对 保留环绕是无效的，如果你要制作兼容所有设备的 2声道AAC 的话，选择 Stereo （双声道）如果你知道 DVD 的轨道是 Dodby pro logical (杜比逻辑) 格式的话 你就选 杜比逻辑 通常 DVD 壳子上会写.
5.bitrate 160kbps is OK, if you want better 256 is enough 对于重新编码 AAC 的轨道要选择 Bitrate 码率, 160 一般就够了， 要音乐级别品质就选 256.
6 review all your tracks. 最后观察你的每一根轨道.

0. Click Import srt to import your srt file from internet (Optional) 点击 第三个 Import srt 按钮来添加你网上找来并处理好的字幕 (可选)1. Click Add all to add all subtitles from your DVD. and can add more for internet srt subtitles. 点击1那里选择 add all 来导入所有 DVD 自带的字幕，你也可以再加一点来导入你网上找来的并做过 UTF-8 处理的字幕。
2. click 2 area for the default subtitle you want. 选择你要的轨道 点击2 处就会设置成默认字幕

Set reference frame to 2 to 4
disable CABAC
disable 8x8 Transfors
for more compatible. (this will make your h.264 to main profile, no need a powerful player to play it.)
Finally Hit start to start converting.
看图关掉那些东西，可以让更多配置教差的设备播放你的 MP4 （关掉后就是 main profile）
最后点击 Start 开始编码 mp4.
漫长的等待后你就得到了你的万能 MP4 基本那里都能播放了。
至少我知道的 iPhone 3GS 以上的 iOS 设备，android 手机， PS3, PSP, xbox 360, 外国牌子的电视 都能播放。 国产设备更不在话下。
Input into iTunes and ready for stream导入 iTunes 就能让其他 iOS 设备在线播放

Play on iPad's system video app. no 3rd party player is needed and you got all audio and sub tracks.
在 iPad 的系统播放器上播放 无需第三方 APP, 音轨字幕可以调节.

Play on Apple TV, if you used AC3 passthrough, you can get 5.1 Surround sound from your speak system 如果你之前选择 AC3 passthrough 保留 AC3 音轨， 你会得到 5.1 声道。

Set reference frame to 2 to 4
disable CABAC
disable 8x8 Transfors
for more compatible. (this will make your h.264 to main profile, no need a powerful player to play it.)
Finally Hit start to start converting.
看图关掉那些东西，可以让更多配置教差的设备播放你的 MP4 （关掉后就是 main profile）
最后点击 Start 开始编码 mp4.
漫长的等待后你就得到了你的万能 MP4 基本那里都能播放了。
至少我知道的 iPhone 3GS 以上的 iOS 设备，android 手机， PS3, PSP, xbox 360, 外国牌子的电视 都能播放。 国产设备更不在话下。

烧入的字幕 怎么换?
我这种收集癖好的 必须 英 日 中 少一不可。
不过刚刚用 360 常识了下 确实无法调出字幕.

帮LZ补充一下，假如在Mac上面，不需要DVD Decrypter解密这一步，只需要安装一个VLC就可以了，我家的正版巧虎DVD都这么备份的

巧虎正版DVD是加密的，谢谢，直接用刻录软件复制会报错，在windows下用handbrake压制也会报错，Mac上没有装VLC也会报错，装了vlc就没问题

要看 DVD 是否是逐行的格式，
如果是电影基本都是逐行的， 如果是自制的 可能是 隔行的 就会出现，需要 编码时候开 Deinterlace.

巧了，我也是备份巧虎用，但有一个头疼的问题，无论用handbrake还是格式工厂，都不会识别DVD里面的那个video_ts.vob文件，直接从vts_01_1.vob开始转，这样导致开场介绍部分没有，请问有什么解决方案？
若强制使用视频合并的土办法，handbrake不支持，格式工厂勉强能用，但感觉太不智能太土了。

没有那么完美的事情。
DVD 菜单是非常复杂的东西， 人家说我会作 DVD 意思不是说拿一个视频文件压倒 DVD 里面去 而是说会做 DVD 菜单。
一般 DVD 开机都会 Follow DVD 菜单设定好的程序先放那个 再放那个。 但是这种转码工具不会。 只会直入主题。

我说的那个不是菜单文件，而是视频开始部分，大概有两分钟，没有的话整个视频就不完整了。

随便下一个720P的MKV
DEMUX之后，音轨转换为AAC2.0 AAC5.1
然后再次打包为MP4
最后再用工具封装软字幕即可

不要使用 AAC5.1 貌似兼容不好
直接保留 AC3 ATV 就能透传到 功放 解码的

菜单是由很多个视频文件组成的
你那个开始其实也是菜单的一部分。 但是是一个独立的视频文件，所以软件不会这么智能的知道 你要那一段东西。

非常感谢，我试试这个，以前从来没捣鼓过DVD备份，忽然还真没方向。顺便说格式工厂这个软件真心渣，bug奇多，至于QQ影音更上不了台面。而handbrake简直是大炮打蚊子，虽然专业，但却功能不足。
